History of the church

St. Xavier's Church was built in the year 1605, more than 400 years ago. It was built by Portuguese Christians who ruled Goa at that time. They wanted to create a grand and holy place to show their faith. The name "Bom Jesus" means "good Jesus" in Portuguese. This church became very famous because it was strong, beautiful, and there was something that no other church in India had - the body of a saint.

Significance of St. Francis Xavier

St. Francis Xavier was a Catholic priest from Spain, who came to India in 1542. He was sent by the Pope and by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) to spread Christianity in Asia. He worked in many parts of India, especially in Goa and southern regions, and also went to Japan and other countries.

St. Francis Xavier was known to help the poor, teach people about peace and fix the sick. After his death in 1552 in China, his body was brought back to Goa. When people opened their coffin, they were surprised to see that his body had not decayed. It looked fresh even after a year, and people believed that it was a miracle.

His body was later placed in a silver box inside the church. Today, people from different countries visit the church to see this box, which is placed in a special area inside the basilica.
