The story of Chapora Fort goes back for centuries. Although the current structure was rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1717, the site was a fortification built by Hindu rulers and later by Muslim invaders. Its name comes from the Chapora River, which flows next to it and was a major trade and defense point in the old times.
The Portuguese used this fort to protect its northern border against attacks of Marathas and other local powers. However, the fort changed hands several times. It was briefly taken by the Marathas in 1739 and then returned to Portuguese control. After the decline of Portuguese power, the fort lost its military importance and left for winds and rain.
Despite its ruined state today, Chapora Fort is strong as a symbol of the turbulent past and multicultural heritage of Goa.
Although many local and tourists always knew about the Chapora Fort, it gained national fame after appearing in the 2001 Bollywood film "Dil Chahta Hai". The famous scene, where three friends sit on the wall of the fort, looking at the sea, turned the fort into a visiting place for film lovers.
Since then, it has become a place not only for the visit of sightseeing, but also to remove that prestigious moment.
The ideal time to travel to Chapora Fort is between October and March, when the weather is cold and the sky is clear. It is also the tourist season of Goa, so the fort sees many visitors during this period.
For the best experience, try to travel in the morning -morning for calm scenes or to enjoy the sunset in the evening. Avoid going in the middle of the day during summer, as the sun may harden and there is a slight shade at the top.

Chapora Fort is located in North Goa, near Chapora village, which is about 10 km from Mapusa and 22 km from the state capital Panaji. This vegator is close to the beach, making it easier to combine both in a journey.
You can reach the fort by renting a bike, car or taxi. Public transport is limited, but local buses can leave you nearby. Parking is available based on the hill.

Chapora Fort is built in the style of traditional Portuguese military forts. Unlike some gorgeous forts, its structure is simple and follows the natural shape of the hill. Dark letterite stone walls extend into an uneven oval, and although the most part of the original structure has deteriorated, parts of the war, entrance, and clock posts still remain.
The fort had underground storage rooms, a church and barracks, although today only their ruins exist. It was also cleverly designed along the slope and secret route to provide the passage of escape during the attacks.
As you walk with its broken walls and grass paths, you can imagine the troops patrolling here once, seeing the invaders coming from the sea or land.
Chapora Fort is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and there is no entry fee. To reach the entrance, you have to walk slightly from the base but on a slightly steep path. The hike takes about 10-15 minutes, so wear comfortable shoes and take water, especially in hot weather.
There are small stalls that sell refreshments and souvenirs near the entrance, but the fort itself remains untouched and natural.
Chapora Fort may not be gorgeous like forts in Rajasthan or is well preserved like churches in old Goa, but has an intimate simplicity that leaves a permanent memory. This tells the story of flexibility through the battle of Goa and its collapsing stones, and its thoughts provide one of the best natural scenes in the state.
